W.I.P. Wednesday... (Sort of!)

For those of you who are part of the non-nerd-modeler/painter crowd, a  W.I.P. is an acronym for a "Work In Progress" and has become something of a nerdy-phenomenon in the modeling, gaming, pro-painter world.  This is a 'sort-of'' post because... well it isn't Wednesday (It's Thursday-although my brain is still locked in last night) and it isn't a W.I.P., it is a completed project.  But, enough banter... here ya go!

Games Workshop released the boxed game Overkill almost two years ago, with some fabulous sculpts  for Deathwatch Space Marine armies.  It took me a bit to convert over from vanilla Space Marines painted like Deathwatch, to an actual Deathwatch army, but once I did... it has been a lot of fun!  Jetek Suberei, is the White Scar Biker sculpt that comes with the set.  One of the things that makes him so cool, is the Deathwatch bike, with it's accompanying scroll-work and Inquisition iconography.

Since the release of the model, I have wanted to do another comparable build, using the model but making a space wolf, since much of the markings would work well with a grey hunter seconded into the Deathwatch.  I had to be careful to not disrupt alot of the fine detail, so searching for the right bits did a little bit of doing, but I finally got around to it, and am pretty pleased with the result.

In a bit of a rush to get to work (so the pics are more amateurish), but I hope you like the finished product!!!

Jarl, re-pleat with proper Space Wolf markings on his Deathwatch Bike!

All the proper Space Wolf shield, wolf-totems, and blades have been swapped out from the original model!

  

I used the torso and big, nasty, battle-axe from the Thudnerwolf Cavalry kit (had to work to locate one) in order to make it really appropriate! I also added another wolf totem above the neat Skyclaw chainsword I acquired!

I also added the Thuderwolf Cavalry head to the model, with the beard flowing in the wind to finish it off! Really enjoyed this project, and am very happy with the final product!

Suicide Squad: Deathwatch Kill-Team!

At the beginning of January, I posted some pics of a Deathwatch Kill team that I had pulled out of the closet, and finished painting...

Since that time, there have been a number of customers coming into the store wanting to do a Kill Team Scenario... so we decided to give it a go!

 

Here are my Deathwatch setup behind an Aegis defense line ready for deployment!

 

John brought in his beloved Sons of Russ...

 

And Chris (who recently finished his Necrons), wanted to lay down his fire power!

 

 

 

With John so close to Chris's deployment area, he was too sweet of a target for Chris's Necrons!  Here is John trying (rather feebly) to use the "jedi dice trick" to get his 3+ saves... with a one, two twos, and a five, we are now trying to put together a fundraiser to send John back to the Jedi Academy for further training! (Sheeeesh!)

 

Here is my Deathwatch, led by Sergeant Kail Vibious skirting the battle area, and coming up the flank!

 

I tried really hard to stick with the Deathwatch iconography (notice Vibious's loin tabard), and painting black armor well is NEVER an easy task!

 

Sergeant Vibious bursts through the door, laying down a hailstorm of bolter fire against the Necrons and Wolves, in order to get his Marines up to the spire to retrieve the Chapter Relic they are after! (3 victory points, baby!)

 

Sergeant Jagatun, of the White Scars, is pointing his Marines down a dark, and dank corridor to surprise the other commanders on the other side of the citadel!

 

(I kept the white scar pattern on Jagatun's loin cloth to add some color to the mini!)

 

Mixximion Voss, with his deadly Heavy Bolter, creeps around the corner to spray the unsuspecting Necrons with a hail of deadly fire!  Librarian Lyandro Karras (otherwise known as the scholar), provides psychic support from behind!

With a tie score between the Necrons and the Space Marines (13 points to 13 points), it was time for a showdown! Lyandro got to go first, and was lucky enough to get a penetrating hit... charging his force made with psychic energy, it was instant death for the Necron Lord!

 

(If you look closely, you can see little lightening arcs on the force mace!)

 

Chris, hanging his head in shame... shaking his fist... asking Nuffle why he couldn't have given him either his 6+ "Feel no pain" save, or his 5+ "It will not die" roll!

 

Hee hee hee! John raising his hands with a chiding grin, celebrating the conquering space marines once again! (okay, so it was a bit overkill with Deathwatch and Space Wolves, but we sure had fun!)

Funnin' with Fezglitch the Fanatic!

With my handy-dandy digital camera back in hand, I was able to download photos of work this past week. (Yay!)  So, I am now playing a little 'catch-up' on some recent events... one of those was a new-join into our Blood Bowl league.  It is always a good thing to have new blood.  It was evident from the get-go that he was wanting to play something rather devious, nefarious, and wicked fast, so there was really only one way to go... Skaven!  Unfortunately, these poor cheese lovers often end up dead due to low armor values.  Wanting to give this 'noob' coach a little incentive to play with some nice inducements (and wanting to encourage him to get his team painted), I dove into my bits box and built this guy from a GW Skaven clan rat pack, and some Dark Angel force-weapon bits... and we get, Fezclitch, the Skaven Fanatic!

The "ball and chain" that fanatics use in the game I felt needed to be something more 'plague rat'ish... taking some Dark Angel force weapon bits, I was able to assemble them together for a nice impromptu censor 'ball & chain'!

The censor ball with the skull attached, and the progressive chain-links with smaller censors, really had a much better skaven-clan-rat feel than the traditional ball & chain goblin fanatic that we see on the pitch.  Additionally, this star player has "foul appearance" (opposing players can only hit him on a 2+) and "disturbing presence" (any player within 3 spaces are at a -1 to catch, pass, or hand-off the football) wanting to create something more intimidating to represent these stats, I think the final product really fits the bill! A very fun little project! :D

Bittersand Swamp Gators!

Quite a while ago, I was inspired by one of the coaches in my RL Blood Bowl League to pursue the college football team.  I was also very inspired by James Wappell's New Orc Giants conversions he made for the game!  I threw together this Orc Blitzer one night made from a GW 40K Orc Boyz unit I had laying around and decided to follow the color scheme of the Florida Gators; not that I am a gators fan--just that gators and greenskins seemed to go well together.  In addition, there is an area south of Barak Varr in Warhammer Fantasy Orcland known as the Bittersand Swamp, inhabited by Orcs and River Trolls!  Bittersand Swamp Gators had a nice ring to it!

Blood Bowl High Elf Catchers

These are the GW converted plastic Dark Elf Corsair minis, with the mits off of the human GW BB plastic catchers, to create the catchers for my High Elf team the Tor Achare Titans!  I gave each one a different pose with different hair color to distinguish them on the pitch.  Remember my previous post? (notice the yellow bands and the yellow cloaks!)

I like how the dip added the extra look of being 'dirty' like they have been scrapping it up on the pitch!  No6 (Valiananore) is currently leading the league in TD's!

Blood Bowl High Elf Blitzers

Yes... I put in two posts today since I missed yesterday's (waaaay too many irons in the fire!)  This is a pair of High Elf Blitzers for my Blood Bowl Team, the Tor Achare Titans!  These minis were conversions for the GW Warhammer Dark Elf Corsairs, and (as with my throwers), the "Army Painter" method was used, once again, to get them quickly on the pitch.  You may also notice that their dragon-hide cloaks are a different color... that is to help distinguish positions on the pitch, ie: White = Thrower, Red = Blitzer, Green = Hitter, Yellow = Catcher, Grey = Lineman, and Blue = Big Guy/Star Player! There you have it!

Blood Bowl High Elf Throwers

Last week I posted on (of two) throwers for my High Elf Blood Bowl Team, the Tor Achare Titans!  Here are BOTH throwers ready to scrap it up!  They models are conversions from: GW Dark Elf Corsairs, arms from the GW Blood Bowl Human Throwers, and legs from GW Dark Eldar Troops.  As I hate playing with unpainted minis on the pitch, I used the "Army Painter" method to get these guys done quickly... not bad results!

Warhammer 40K Fist Commander Gallery #2

A couple of days ago, I posted the pic of the Imperial Fists Commander; the pics were not that great, and the base was rudimentary.  It was (more or less) an attempt to see how a bad pic, and a bad base will affect the perception of whether or not this is a Cool Mini or Not!  Here are the updated pics, with the new base... tell me what you think!

Blood Bowl High Elf Thrower

You might notice that (of late) my focus is on Blood Bowl: love the game, and love the fact that you can paint a 'themed' team knowing that there is a 'light' at the end of the tunnel painting wise!  I do have some 40K projects I am working on, but I wanted to share this High Elf Thrower I converted from Warhammer DE Corsairs, and a human plastic thrower, and a 40K DE troop; I really like the result!

I actually have an entire team that I did (which I will post up at a later date) but the result is very pleasing to me!  The BEST thing about the "Tor Achare Titans" (color scheme after Tennessee Titans--just 'fit' with Tor Achare) is that these are one-off minis that NOBODY else has... most appealing!

Warhammer 40K Fist Commander Gallery #1

This is a Space Marine Hero (Imperial Fist, Third Company Commander) that I converted a while ago: he is assembled from the original space marine hero mini (picture inset) along with the combi-weapon from Space Marine Lord Azrael.  Additionally, he has been fitted with the bionical arm and power sword from a vintage space marine veteran sergeant.  The helmet comes from another veteran vintage mini.   VERY versatile and an amazing one-off miniature!

Below you can see some of the custom built and painted WYSIWYG items that are included: Master-crafted bolter/plasma gun from Lord Azrael, frag & krak grenades, bionics, terminator honors, purity seals, laurels (iron halo), and a power sword!
